Last week it was the “discomix” or reggae’s version of the extended 12" mix and this week is simply Disco Reggae, the unlikely marriage of four-on-the-floor 1970s dance music with reggae.
There are covers galore, the Blood Sisters doing “Ring My Bell,” Jennifer Lara with Evelyn “Champagne” King’s “I’m In Love” to originals like Dennis Bovell’s “Heaven” and Tapper Zukie’s “Freak” but also straight-ahead reggae renditions of Diana Ross classics: Michel Prophet doing “Upside Down” and a heavy heavy version of Mr. Sleepy himself Horace Andy with “Love Hangover”! Oh and let’s not forget the disco inspired hi-hat sound from the mid-70s the “Flying Cymbals” sound on Johnny Clarke’s “None Shall Escape the Judgment”!
